Modern Foreign Languages
Within our school community we have a variety of different languages spoke. We value all languages and encourage children to share their home language with us.
From Year 3 through to Year 6, we then begin to learn French.
We believe that learning a language is a life-long, cultural and linguistic skill, especially in an increasingly globalised world. Learning a modern foreign language enables the children to develop new skills and confidence; it promotes initiative and broadens their understanding of the world and diversity within society.
How we deliver our curriculum

At Newlands Primary School, we follow a scheme from Language Angels with purposefully designed progressive French lessons, whereby our children develop the ability to read, write and converse in French. Our teaching exposes children to the written and spoken language through a range of songs and stories, which enhances the learning of vocabulary and grammar. In addition to the language, children are taught about traditions in French-speaking countries.
EYFS and KS1 begin to be exposed to French through songs, stories and basic vocabulary.
How we support everyone to learn
The learning of French incorporates all learners, irrespective of their ability and needs. The learning of a language can often challenge preconceived ideas about ability.
Our teaching is very interactive, using a range of strategies to aid visual and auditory experiences, including pictures, songs and stories. These practical approaches help children to make links between pictures, the sound the word makes and what it looks like written down.
We support those who are already fluent through working with families and wider agencies to provide challenging learning opportunities.
On rare occasions, a child's need in the English language might be so significant that introducing a new language could be to the detriment of their learning, discussion between the school and parents will determine how best to support the child if this is the case.
