Year 5
Welcome to Beech Class.
In Beech Class, your class teacher is Miss Thompson.
The teaching assistant is Mrs Cope.
Reminders:
-
On Wednesday and Friday we have PE, so please come to school in your PE Kit.
-
Please remember to bring your reading book to school every day and if possible, try to read at home for at least 60 minutes per week. Reading is the key to unlocking the rest of the curriculum and a priority for all of our children.
- You will always find a member of staff at the door at drop off and pick up if you have any questions or queries.
Here are some of the exciting things that we will be learning during your time in Year 5:
We have some exciting science topics in Year 5, including a topic about Earth and Space in the Autumn term. We will be going on a school trip to Winchester Science Centre and watching a planetarium show whilst we are there. This topic also links to our class text, The Jamie Drake Equations by Chirstopher Edge and Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly.
In geography, we will be looking at the water cycle and rivers. We will be exploring the features of the upper, middle and lower course of a river and then seeing these features during a river walk along Blackwater River.
Our history topics in Year 5 will be the Ancient Greeks and the Maya. When looking at the Greeks, we will make predictions about the Battle of Marathon and discuss their battle strategy. We will also look at how the Greeks used democracy to unite their people. We will spend time comparing the religious practises of the Greeks and Maya and look at how their Gods influenced their daily life.
In Art and D&T, we cover a wide range of topics from woodwork to cooking to sewing. We make wooden cars in the autumn term and make clay pottery in the spring inspired by the pots of the Ancient Greeks. The most popular topic in Year 5 is our Greek cooking lessons where we enjoy trying new Greek food; we make a Greek salad and feta & honey pastry parcels that always go down a treat.
I am looking forward to a fantastic year in Year 5!
