Personal, Social, Health, and Relationships
PSHE is an integral part of teaching within Newlands Primary School. We value and promote children’s personal, social and economic development as well as their health and well-being. Within our teaching we give children the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives and to become informed and kind citizens.
We follow the SCARF Scheme, which is adapted for our children to ensure there is clear progression throughout the school. Teachers plan and teach, based on the needs and interests of their children in their class and adapt lessons in order to both support and challenge learning and understanding.
Children are encouraged to be individuals and develop good relationships with their peers and staff, to take responsibility for their own behaviour. All staff provide good role models for children and work hard to promote a safe and happy environment.
How we deliver our curriculum
At Newlands Primary School, we follow a scheme from SCARF with purposefully designed progressive PSHE lessons. PSHE is taught under five headings. These are the same for each year group for Years 1 to 6: Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship.
The Early Years Curriculum covers PSHE through the strand of Personal Social and Emotional Development (PSED). PSED is not taught in isolation, it is an ongoing strand throughout a child's time in the Early Years.
How we support everyone to learn
The learning of PSHE is taught every week. PSHE incorporates every learner, regardless of their ability and needs. In fact, the learning of PSHE is so varied and can often highlight preconceived ideas which can be openly discussed in a safe environment.
Teachers plan using SCARF and will often enhance the learning opportunities through visuals and key questions to promote extended thinking to ensure it is all-inclusive.
Our teaching of PSHE involves and offers active participation as well as the opportunity to record in written form. This could be either in a child's individual PSHE book or recorded in whole class display.
