Maths

At Newlands Primary School, our curriculum allows all children to reach their full potential in mathematics. We ensure that the National Curriculum requirements are met across the school through a balanced delivery of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving. Throughout school, children are engaged and enthusiastic about their learning as they are proud of their mathematical success.

We believe children benefit from our concrete, pictorial and abstract approach (CPA), which allows them to create a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and ideas from Early Years through to the end of Year 6. As a school, we value the importance of mental strategies and have developed a curriculum that allows children time to focus on these skills. We follow a cyclical model that allows us to revisit domains regularly, ensuring retrieval opportunities and a deeper understanding. Using the Hampshire Schemes of Learning as a basis, teachers adapt their planning to suit the needs of the children in their classes by scaffolding tasks where needed and creating further challenge for all.

Every maths lesson begins with a starter that recaps previous learning. This ensures that key skills and number facts are embedded through consistent daily practise. We use the ‘I do, we do, you do’ structure during teacher inputs. This creates opportunities to demonstrate key language, models and strategies and allows children to grow in confidence and develop independence when being introduced to new topics. Teachers demonstrate positive attitudes to maths at all times by being passionate and delivering engaging lessons. They use ongoing Assessment for Learning to identify gaps, address misconceptions and move learning forward to ensure progress for all.

We give children the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their day-to-day lives by promoting a love of maths. We ensure children are excited, confident and resilient when encountering maths questions and problems throughout the school and in the future.

Our mathematics provision ensures that our children:

  • Have a conceptual understanding of maths at a concrete, pictorial and abstract (CPA) level
  • Show enjoyment and resilience when tackling a variety of challenges within a maths lesson and encountering maths in different contexts.
  • Have secure knowledge of times tables and number facts and can apply these within their learning.
  • Are engaged, challenged and make progress in all lessons
  • Ultimately, they achieve highly and are well-prepared for the next stage of their education.
