Year 4

Welcome to Maple Class.

In Maple Class, your class teacher is Mr Redhead and the teaching assistants are Miss Murray (mornings) and Mr Sealey (Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons).

Reminders:

· On Wednesday and Thursday we have PE, so please come to school in your PE Kit.

· Please remember to try to read at home for at least 60 minutes per week. Reading is the key to unlocking the rest of the curriculum and a priority for all of our children.

· You will always find a member of staff at the door at drop off and pick up if you have any questions or queries.

Here are some of the exciting things that we will be learning during your time in Year 4:

Our history topic in Year 4 will be the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. We will learn where these invaders came from and how they lived and settled in Britain. We will also discuss whether Alfred the Great really was great, how the Vikings navigated and lived when at sea and what life was like for a child during this period of British history .

In geography, we study world climate zones and biomes. This is brought to life during our residential visit to Minstead Study Centre where we explore the various and unique habitats within the New Forest.

In science, we will be looking at the human digestive system and examining animal skulls to identify what they eat. We also learn how to create electrical circuits and how sound is created and how it travels to our ears.

In D&T, we cover a wide range of topics from woodwork to cooking to sewing. We make a Christmas stocking in the autumn term and make wooden and clay clocks in the summer inspired by the work of the architects and artists of the past. While in Art we sketch primates and learn about shading. We also look at contemporary artists and try and create work in their style.

There is also the diverse mix of sports and activities in our PE lessons. All of this means I am really looking forward to a brilliant year in Year 4!
